I’ve spent a few days out here over the years. Everyone seems to like to go for a wander along the quay and then sit with a drink at Creeks End Inn to watch the world go by. The last time I came I jumped on the ferry to Salcombe which was £10 cash only, for a one way ticket. We had to walk to the jetty beside the Crabshell Inn to board the ferry. The views on the journey especially on a sunny day are stunning. You’ll be taken to the Salcombe landing point which is beside the Ferry Inn. More on my time in Salcombe here.
Couple points of interest are the Squeezebelly lane one of the narrowest public thoroughfares in the UK. The world’s smallest nightclub, which is actually a phone box decked out with mirrors and a disco ball and a bit of historical interest would be the Shambles five granite pillars dating from 1586.
Kingsbridge is the third largest settlement after Ivybridge and Totnes in the South Hams district of Devon, UK and lies roughly mid-point between Plymouth to the west and Torquay to the east. It’s 32 miles (51 km) south-southwest of Exeter. The town is linked to Plymouth and Dartmouth by the A379 road, and to Salcombe and Totnes by the A381.
- Kingsbridge is in fact a combination of two towns, Kingsbridge and Dodbrooke. Dodbrooke was granted its own market in 1257 and had become a borough by 1319. While Dodbrooke was originally considered to be the dominant of the two, Kingsbridge later expanded to include it.
- Since the granting of the right to hold a market in 1219 Kingsbridge has carried on the tradition as a market town.
- Locals born here are known as Kingsbridgian.
- The Kingsbridge Information Centre sits conveniently on the Town Square.
- 5G is now available throughout town and the outskirts.
- Free WiFi access on the Town Square courtesy of the Kingsbridge Information Centre.
- The distinctive 1850-built clock tower has one face deliberately omitted in the direction of what was once the workhouse. It’s said this was to discourage clock watching.
- The Shambles five granite pillars date from 1586.
- Born in Kingsbridge in 1705, the acclaimed chemist William Cookworthy discovered English china clay and produced the first English porcelain.
- Squeezebelly Lane, as its name suggests, is too narrow for more than one to pass through at a time. There’s a patient wait for anyone cutting through from the Embankment to Fore Street.
The town formed around a bridge which was built in or before the 10th century between the royal estates of Alvington, to the west, and Chillington, to the east, hence giving it the name of Kyngysbrygge (“King’s bridge”). In 1219
- The prosperity of Kingsbridge was traditionally based on the weaving trade, but by the Victorian era an active shipping industry grew up, with tanning and shipbuilding making the harbour area a bustling place.
There are a few B&Bs, one or two with very nice views of the estuary that you can wake up to, ranging from £40 a night upward to £300.
