You can easily miss the Clapper Bridge while you’re driving along as it’s fairly hidden and it’s not until you’re on the road bridge it’s suddenly right there next to you. Luckily there were a few spaces on the left opposite the East Dart Hotel, so we could park up and have a little wander around.
For a small village it does get busy, there was almost always someone around, especially on the clapper bridge taking photos. Getting a clean shot proved quite difficult, so I’ve had to do a little editing to get the final image I was happy with.
If you’re hungry i can recommend the Warren House Inn, we had a steak baguette and I couldn’t fault it it was delicious.
Postbridge is a hamlet in the heart of Dartmoor in the UK county of Devon. It is situated roughly midway between Princetown and Moretonhampstead.
- The clapper bridge dates back to the 13th century and is Grade II listed.
- The road bridge is a grade II-listed structure built in the 1780s.
- The word clapper is thought to derive from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘cleaca’, meaning stepping stones, or ‘bridging the stepping stones’.
- In nearby Bellever Forest, there are many archaeological remains, including round houses, stone rows and a burial cist.
- It is important to keep all gates shut in order to prevent cross-breeding with ponies from the surrounding area. Please do not feed the ponies.

The Clapper Bridge is believed to have been built in the 13th century to enable pack horses to cross the river, carrying tin to the stannary town of Tavistock.
If you’re not keen on camping then you can always book in at the youth hostel.
- Camping, You’re not allowed to set up camp in the forest and they have now put up some signs warning you. You have to hop across the river (or walk around to bellever bridge) to the otherside where there are plenty of places to set up along the river. Individuals and small groups are allowed to camp for up to two nights in the same place without asking permission. When planning your trip, make sure you check-out the Dartmoor Wild Camping map. All wild campers must adhere to the Dartmoor Backpack Camping Code.

Everything in Postbridge is easily within walking distance from the visitor centre car park. The walking trails are moderate with a steady climb up the hill to the top. It can also be soft underfoot in places. The most difficult is the walk to the Powdermill.

- Bus, The 98 from Yelverton Roundabout stops at Postbridge and Bellever village.
- Car, The easiest way to get here, there is a car park by the visitor center run by the forestry, but there is a fee for parking here. £1 for 3 hours or £2 over 3 hours. For free parking you might be lucky on the verge opposite the East Dart hotel.
Tip: Remember Dartmoor has a 40mph speed limit to protect the cattle, sheep and ponies who freely roam the moor and can wander onto the roads at any time.

- There are a couple circular walks that take you around some of the old settlements, open moorland and up to Bellever Tor, Laughter Tor or Powdermill.
