Enjoy a 360 virtual tour of Becky Falls within the spectacular and unspoilt ancient oak woodland valley in the heart of Dartmoor.
Update: 4th October 2021
- Since the pandemic you now have to pre-book before arriving
The drive will take you on narrow single track roads, which are commonplace in Devon & Cornwall. The official car park is free, but you will be expected to pay the parks entrance fee. We were lucky and found some on street parking in Manaton village near the Kestor Inn and walked to the falls from there. Walking across the field into the woodland following the path alongside Hayne Brook (stream) to where we eventually joined the red nature trail. This trail takes you right past the falls and its dramatic 70ft drop at the heart of the park and where you can go boulder scrambling. Just be careful as some of the rocks are covered in moss and can be very slippery. There are also many smaller falls to enjoy along the length of the brook. The waterfall is especially stunning after recent rainfall.
About halfway around the red trail we stumbled across the Money Tree where for almost 100 years people have been leaving their pennies as the legend has it that a serpent lived in the brook and ate the occasional traveller. In order to ensure safe passage, the pixies would give you an invisibility charm as long as you paid a small toll by placing a coin in the tree. There must now be 3 or 4 trees with coins embedded into their bark.
The red trail isn’t the easiest as there are many steps and obstacles on the route. There is a choice of trails: Blue for a gentle walk along the Becka Brook and through the ancient oak woodland. Red where you’ll find the waterfall and the Purple Trail is where you’ll get views of the lower falls, but this is a challenging walk on more rugged terrain and will add a good 30 minutes to the red trail.
If you do want to go into the petting zoo or any of the facilities you’ll have to pay the entry fee of £8.50 Adult or £7.50 Child (aged 4-15).
